Foundation Awards $25,700 in Grants in Third Quarter Alone

True to its mission of empowering people to improve their financial well-being,” the Cornerstone Credit Union Foundation (Foundation) has awarded $25,700 in grants in the third quarter of 2013. Year to date, the Foundation has awarded $141,068 in general grants, and $14,750 in financial literacy grants.  

Third quarter grants include 11 general grants and three financial literacy grants. Consumer Credit Union Counseling Services of Greater San Antonio and RAISE Texas are among third quarter grant recipients.

CCCS of Greater San Antonio is collaborating with Firstmark CU, Generations FCU, Randolph-Brooks FCU, River City FCU, Security Service FCU and San Antonio CU to improve the financial well-being of low and moderate-income families in San Antonio.

Together, they will implement a program designed to provide consumers with an action plan, guidance and support as they work to achieve financial goals which may include reducing debt, improving credit, buying a home, creating a workable budget, saving money and improving their overall financial well-being. 

Individual financial counseling will be provided in a series of one-on-one sessions in person, over the phone, or via the internet.  Consumers can choose a package with a predetermined number of sessions included or receive coaching on a month by month basis.  Depending on their needs, they can choose between one of the following coaching packages:

  • Basic Financial Coaching
  • Pre-Purchase Housing Coaching
  • Credit Analysis Coaching
  • Debt Repayment Coaching
  • Life after Bankruptcy Coaching

Families will also have the opportunity to attend group classes and webinars that cover topics such as building a strong credit report, money management 101 and money management beyond the basics.   

RAISE Texas’ grant will be funding expenses related to their Asset Building Community Leadership Team Training and Planning Session in November.  They will be bringing together asset building community leaders from diverse geographical areas to discuss and research cutting edge asset-building activities happening in communities across Texas.  They will also be discussing innovative grants and pilot projects through Opportunity Texas.  

The training will benefit credit unions in two ways:

  • First, by bringing together community leaders from across the Texas for training on asset-building, this will provide these local communities with cutting edge information to take back to their credit union communities.
  • Second, the trainings and pilot projects will offer opportunities for credit unions to play a key role in expanding these efforts and partnering with Raise Texas and Opportunity Texas.   

RAISE Texas is a network of non-profit organizations and institutions that is working to support and expand asset-building activities and programs in Texas.  These activities include IDAs, free tax preparation and EITC sites, children’s savings accounts, broad-based community financial education, and the development of alternative financial products. 

Third-quarter Foundation grants also includes:         

  • Three Junior Achievement grants 
  • One chapter grant  
  • Six training and conference scholarships for credit union staff and volunteers
