In keeping with its commitment to improve the financial knowledge of young people, the Cornerstone Credit Union Foundation (Foundation) is hosting a FOCUS “Train-the-Trainer” workshop March 21 in Austin. Designed to arm credit unions, educators, non-profit organizations and community leaders with the skills they need to motivate young people into adopting positive savings and spending habits, the one-day program is being held at the University FCU Plaza Event Center, located at 8303 North Mopac Expressway.
The FOCUS “Train-the-Trainer” workshop covers BizKid$ and the National Endowment for Financial Education High School Financial Planning Program (NEFE HSFPP)
BizKid$ is a financial literacy initiative that includes an award winning TV series, free classroom curriculum, outreach activities, a website and a monthly online newsletter targeting children 9-16 years old.
Revised in 2012, the NEFE HSFPP is a turnkey financial literacy program specifically focused on basic personal finance skills that are relevant to the lives of pre-teens, teens, and young adults. Organized into six module topics (planning, borrowing, earning capability, investing, financial services, and insurance), the program includes six topical Student Guides, an assortment of 45-minute teacher lesson plans, and a growing collection of online resources and learning activities.
According to Foundation Executive Director Courtney Moran, there is a tremendous demand from schools, educators and community organizations for financial education. And credit unions in particular are taking a leadership role in working with schools across the country to provide this interactive, seven-unit program that covers everything from being a responsible spender to keeping your money safe and secure in a federally-insured financial institution.
To ensure credit unions deploy the most effective strategies to present this material to young people in their respective communities, the Foundation offers free FOCUS “Train the Trainer” workshops throughout the year. Following is a list of other workshops scheduled in 2014:
April 18, Dallas
June 27, Houston
July 11, Arkansas
Oct. 10, San Antonio
