Pandemic Program
Pandemic Program

The Cornerstone Credit Union Foundation understands the need to take care of credit unions and their staff in the Cornerstone region during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Foundation is proud of its traditional disaster relief efforts and its ability to spring to action when natural disasters strike in our region and elsewhere. The situation at hand doesn’t meet the Foundation’s current criteria and is more far-reaching than anything experienced before.

To determine the best course of action, the Foundation started with understanding what problems need to be solved today and in the months and years to come. How does the organization help in a way that has a ripple effect, spreading from staff to members and from immediate to long-term assistance? In doing so, the Foundation also wants to stay true to its mission of empowering people to improve their financial well-being.

The Foundation is launching a new program, helping credit unions empower staff and members to improve their financial well-being during this unprecedented time and beyond. The program is made up of the following components.

The goal of the toolkit is to enable Foundation staff to help credit union staff build upon their skills and knowledge as they help members navigate their individual paths to financial health. The toolkit covers topics, such as finance, coaching, counseling, the cycle of change, and building relationships, which are all intricately connected.

Financial counseling certification program

The Foundation is offering the Credit Union National Association Financial Counseling Certification Program (FiCEP) free of charge to affiliated Cornerstone credit union staff, combining the convenience of a self-study program with group hands-on learning. Students gain the knowledge necessary to assist and empower members to improve their financial well-being. Upon completion of the eight-module program, they become Certified Credit Union Financial Counselors (CCUFC). Through this advanced training, credit union employees acquire skills to help members experiencing financial difficulties, reduce delinquencies and charge-offs, and grow product and service revenue. Additionally, students demonstrate the credit union difference and attract new members.

The Foundation is offering two options: the standard program and the accelerated program. The accelerated program begins on May 18, and participants will complete the training the week of July 24.* The standard program starts on July 22 with completion during the week of Nov. 6.*

After students pass exams for Module I and Module II for both options, they will receive their certifications and be available to counsel members.

* Students understand that barring extraordinary circumstances, they will complete the full program within the provided time frame. If not completed, the student will be responsible for reimbursing the Foundation for $550, which is the original cost of the program.

Free financial one-on-one counseling

The Foundation is partnering with BALANCE to offer credit union staff one-on-one coaching with a licensed financial coach/counselor for up to one year.

Credit union staff and their dependents can call 888-456-2227 toll-free to discuss money management questions, receive debt counseling, schedule appointments for free budget counseling, or request information on a variety of financial issues.

BALANCE will provide educational materials and resources in electronic format and two free monthly webinars to assist with personal finance education and personal financial wellness. Credit union staff can request credit reports (free or at their own expense) with access to certified credit report reviewers to clarify content, answer questions, and provide tools to assist with fraud or dispute issues.

Credit union employees can also receive BALANCE debt solutions at their own expense, as well as access to the BALANCE housing department for help with issues from first time home buying to foreclosure prevention.

Affordable e-learning

The Foundation is partnering with three financial capability providers to offer affordable e-learning platforms to credit unions for one year. Each provider will host an educational webinar, describing its programs and costs and allowing credit unions to choose which platform best suits their needs and budgets.

The Foundation will cover a portion of the cost to host the program on its website for one year based on the credit union’s asset size, with the understanding that the credit union can apply for a traditional financial capability grant in 2021 to continue the program.

Asset size Foundation covers Credit union covers
Less than $51 million 50% 50%
$51 million to $750 million 40% 60%
More than $750 million 20% 80%
