NCUA Hosting Financial Literacy Webinar

Credit unions can learn more about promoting financial literacy by participating in a free webinar, “Financial Literacy: Putting Your Mission into Action,” hosted by the National Credit Union Administration on April 3, 2014, at 2 p.m. Eastern. 
Hosted by Kenneth Worthey, Financial Literacy and Outreach Analyst in NCUA’s Office of Consumer Protection, the webinar will feature four speakers:

  • Gail Laster, Director, NCUA’s Office of Consumer Protection
  • Louisa Quittman, Director, Office of Financial Education, U.S. Department of Treasury
  • Gigi Hyland, Executive Director, National Credit Union Foundation
  • Katie Bryan, Communications Director, Consumer Federation of America

Promoting financial literacy is a core credit union mission and the NCUA webinar, part of the agency’s National Financial Literacy Month activities. Click here to register. As champions of financial education, Cornerstone Credit Union Foundation Executive Director Courtney Moran is encouraging credit unions to take advantage of every opportunity to get more engaged in financial education outreach. She reminds credit unions that throughout the year, the Foundation offers free FOCUS “train the trainer” workshops. This one-day workshop is designed to arm credit unions, educators, non-profit organizations and community leaders with the skills they need to motivate young people into adopting positive savings and spending habits.

Workshop participants will learn about BizKid$ and the National Endowment for Financial Education High School Financial Planning Program (NEFE HSFPP). .  Following is a list of workshops scheduled in 2014:

  • April 30, Dallas, Texas
  • June 6, Oklahoma City, Okla.
  • June 27, Houston, Texas
  • July 11, Arkansas
  • Sept. 19, Austin, Texas
  • Oct. 10, San Antonio, Texas

Moran is also encouraging credit unions to hold a "Financial Fitness Day" fundraiser April 2, to kick off National Financial Literacy Month. This initiative will raise funds for the Cornerstone Foundation and the National Credit Union in support of their financial education initiatives.

To participate, credit union organizations can hold one (or more) of the following fundraisers on April 2:

  • Jeans or Casual Day for staff
  • Bake Sale for staff and/or members
  • Deduct or Donate a Buck - Ask staff and/or members to consider a voluntary contribution of $1 or more either in cash as they complete their transaction and/or deducting from their checking or saving account as often as they choose.

“Financial Fitness Day is a chance for the credit union community to rally together for a good cause,” says Moran. “These are just suggestions. Credit unions can certainly come up with their own creative ideas to raise funds.”
