Tuesday, January 28, 2014 8:00 AM

Knowing how to effectively deploy financial education into your local schools and community is critical to addressing the financial literacy problem in this country. At the Cornerstone Credit Union Foundation’s Feb. 6-7 FOCUS Summit, National Endowment for Financial Education High School Financial Planning Program (NEFE HSFPP) Director Susan Sharkey will present two sessions: Make a Difference in Your Community, and New NEFE Tools: Engaging Your Community in Financial Education.

In the New NEFE Tools session, Sharkey will discuss the new program materials and relate how credit unions can use the program to teach teens as well as support teachers in their communities. In addition, attendees will become familiar with the program module topics, learn how to access program materials, explore how the program content fits into existing programs, and examine other NEFE resources for teens. In the Make a Difference in Your Community session, Sharkey will share three tips for success.

In addition to Ewing’s financial education legislative update, the Feb. 6-7 FOCUS Summit features:

  • A Keynote address from Jean Chatzky, an acclaimed author and financial editor for NBC’s “Today” show. Chatzky will offer a frank discussion about money, including how to get it, how to keep it, how to invest it, and how to make peace with it.
  • Best practice panel discussion with a local superintendent, principals, and teachers that will focus on how credit unions can enter schools, sustain the relationship, and remain relevant.
  • A Life Simulation facilitated by Lois Kitsch, REAL Solutions national program manager with the National Credit Union Foundation. A Life Simulation is designed to help participants better understand the difficulties faced by families living in poverty.
  • An overview of financial education tools available to credit unions and educators, including the National Endowment for Financial Education High School Financial Planning Program, BizKid$, FamilyMint, Sammy the Savings Rabbit, Money Mammals, and more.
