The Cornerstone Credit Union Foundation’s Grants Committee recently met and approved 17 grants totaling $13,750. FirstLight FCU in El Paso, Texas was the recipient of a financial education grant. The credit union will use the grant to cover some of the costs it incurs as a sponsor of the El Paso Stock Market Game.

Held twice a year (once in spring and once in fall), the Stock Market Game helps to prepare young students by giving them awareness of the stock market and how they could invest in the future and prepare for retirement. FirstLight FCU has sponsored the El Paso Stock Market Game and Banquet provided by the Texas Council on Economic Education for eight years.

According to the credit union, it has a profound effect on students’ research skills, reading skills, and even carries home to their families. The credit union notes that approximately 600 students are directly impacted by the credit union’s sponsorship of this program. Classes are broken into teams and the winners are recognized at an awards banquet – with one being held in the fall and the other in the spring. As a sponsor, FirstLight FCU pays for all the fees associated with any student in middle school and high school that would like to participate. They also pay for the awards banquets.

Each of the first place winners receive a savings certificate that will allow them to open a FirstLight savings account with a donated starting balance of $50.  Second and third place winners receive recognition and awards as well.

“This is such a rewarding event for FirstLight to sponsor,” says Natalia Flores, interim vice president of marketing for the credit union. “FirstLight is very appreciative of the support it has received from the Foundation, as these funds go towards great causes such as this one.”

In addition to the financial education grant that went to FirstLight FCU, the Foundation awarded:

  • 12 training grants
  • 1 Chapter Grant
  • 2 community outreach
